Wright + Doyle SS 24

In some corner on the Planet.

I, Moon, want to tell you the story of a place that today lives only in my memory.

My story begins when two friends, driven by curiosity, ventured to visit a house hidden in the middle of a forest.

This place had been the home of a man famous for his connection with nature. Although a lot of time had passed since he had lived there, his presence still permeated every corner of the house, built entirely of wood and now converted into a museum where sustainability and minimalism were the main themes.

One night, the two friends arrived at this refuge. As they walked through its hallways, filled with objects and memories of the past, a slightly open door led them to a secret library.

There, surrounded by shelves full of stories, a book that seemed to glow with its own light caught their attention. It was not just any book. It was the diary of the former owner, in whose pages a deep love for nature was revealed.

They soon devoured every word of the diary. They discovered secrets to interact respectfully with the environment, techniques to cultivate the land without harming it, and methods to collect water sustainably. It was as if the diary guided them, step by step, towards a life in total harmony with nature.

They also found, on those pages, clothing designs created with natural fabrics, handwoven and dyed with pigments from plants and minerals. Each design reflected the essence of the earth, water, air, and fire.

Inspired by what they were reading, the women decided they wanted to put those ideals into practice. They founded a village on land near the forest, applying the principles and teachings they had found in the diary. They built their houses with sustainable materials and lived off what the forest offered them, without taking more than necessary.

Over time, their project became a living example of how humanity could coexist in peace with nature. People from distant places came to learn about their farming methods, their lifestyle, and their philosophy. Their community stood out for its respect for the planet and for showing that it was possible to live in another way.

Although that place no longer exists, its legacy endures in my memory. And I, Moon, fondly remember that site and the lessons it taught. I tell you all this because I hope to inspire others to seek a deeper connection with our natural world.

Perhaps, in some corner of the planet, someone will read these words and feel called to revive the spirit of that magical place where a life in harmony with nature was possible.

Process

In Inverness, Northern California, lies the home of J.B. Blunk, an artist who lived in the mid-20th century whose daily life was governed by his connection to nature—a place where creativity and nature merge in a unique way.

It was there that Izabella Doyle, co-founder of Wright + Doyle, and her great friend and collaborator Mariah Nielson, decided to embark on a new creative adventure and create some of the designs we present to you in our Collaboration 36.

During their stay, coinciding with an exhibition of the artist Carali McCall in the local gallery, Izabella and Mariah took the time to explore the beauty of the mountains and the Californian coast. “It was an experience that allowed us to reconnect with nature and our artistic vision,” comments Izabella.

The turning point in this collaboration came when Izabella discovered a book that captured her soul: a book with the works of the visual artist Etel Adnan. “Everything lifted my spirit, from the font to the paper, the paintings, and the color combinations,” she says excitedly. Inspired by Adnan’s words and the color palette in her book, she chose the texture of the fabrics for this collection.

Izabella has always sought to combine those soft colors with clean, modern tailoring. “The idea behind the vest, shirt, and trousers comes from that constant search for the essence in tailoring, to simplify while still keeping what’s truly important,” she explains.

The designer wants each piece to convey a sense of effortlessness and sophistication, rooted in meticulous techniques. To achieve this, she opted for a special tropical wool, designed to be worn in warm climates, that feels light to the touch and is breathable, like silk.

The shirt, with its innovative design, can be worn traditionally or by removing the sleeves to tie them at the front or simply leaving them hanging at the side. “I wanted the shirt to offer versatility and freshness,” she notes.

With the same philosophy, she designed the shirt dress, seeking a balance between simplicity and the sensation of wearing multiple layers. The mix of different stripe patterns adds a playful touch to the classic men’s shirt shape, but with the ability to tie it at the front to make it feminine.

Regarding this Collaboration, Izabella concludes: “Each piece reflects our journey, our experiences, and the inspiration that Mariah and I found in that special place. It’s a tribute to the beauty that surrounds us and how art and fashion can merge to create something truly unique.”

Through this project, Wright + Doyle once again demonstrates that fashion can transcend fleeting trends to become a timeless artistic expression, inviting those who wear it to carry with them a piece of history, art, and love for the planet.
