LOONA’S LOVE LETTERS BY ODETTE BLUM

Loona’s love letters

I, Moon, want to tell you about an artisan who learned to weave the essence of the cosmos into forgotten fabrics.

I found her one night in the fields of Holland, where she lived surrounded by animals and a garden that bloomed under my light. In her workshop, a space where silence and peace reigned, she kept ancient fabrics that others had discarded. For her, each piece had a story that deserved to be told again.

I watched her for years as she transformed these fabrics. Her hands worked with the precision of an alchemist, turning the forgotten into something new. With needle and thread, she created her own language that spoke of transformation and beauty.

One night, while working on twelve special pieces she called her love letters, something changed. Upon touching a drop of water on an ancient fabric, she discovered something that had always been there: she saw the same pattern repeating in the leaves of her garden, in the earth, in the fur of her cats, and in the feathers of her chickens.

This discovery transformed her work. She began creating pieces that showed how everything was connected: earth with sky, old with new, simple with extraordinary.

Visitors to her workshop spoke of garments that seemed to hold ancient secrets. She would just smile, because she knew that true magic wasn’t in creating something new, but in awakening the beauty that slept in what already existed.

One day she found an art book that changed everything. Its pages showed her patterns that looked like maps of the universe. These designs connected memories of her father’s workshop, where she learned to love textiles, with her own vision of the world.

Each night, my light illuminated her work table while she turned forgotten fabrics into pieces that reminded their owners of their connection to the earth.

Her creations traveled far, to places where other artisans had woven their own stories for centuries. In each place, her garments awakened something special in those who touched them.

Now, when I illuminate her workshop, I see twelve love letters that tell a simple story: how the old can become new, and how each stitch can be an act of love towards our planet.

Process

From the Netherlands, a textile artist works surrounded by nature, alongside her family, pets, and chickens. Her workshop, a space of light and silence, preserves the essence of her father’s tailor shop, where her story with textiles began.

Odette Blum, the artist featured in our Collaboration 44, discovered her true calling after a career as an interior designer. Through her travels around the world in search of unique textiles, she met artisans and artists who changed her perspective on creation.

“My heart yearns to connect with others through the language of needle and thread. For me, communicating through material creativity has always held deeper meaning than the simple spoken word,” she explains about her approach to textile art.

Her decisive moment came in Tibet, at the Norlha-Atelier workshop. “I was transported in time. I returned to my father’s workshop, seeing him use his large scissors and steam the handmade suits. I knew then that I was born to work with artists and their textiles.”

The collection she presents “Loona’s love letters,” stems from a particular vision of the world. Through recovered and hand-transformed textiles, each piece proposes a new way of observing our environment. “The cosmos exists in every plant and tree, in a drop of water, a grain of sand, in small insects, in all animals and human beings,” she describes about the concept of her work.

Her creative process is nourished by nature and the work of other artists. “It’s an evolving journey to find that unique and original language. Working with the purest materials helps me stay on my path,” she comments about her method.

For her, craftsmanship is fundamental in contemporary design. “When we translate ancient patterns into a new creation, something new is revealed,” she affirms about the union between traditional and modern.

Narrative plays an essential role in her creations. Besides reflecting her personal history, each piece invites others to find connections with their own experiences. “By telling my story, I reflect on my life. People who look at my pieces reflect on this story and their own stories. Something interesting happens then. Narrative leads us to consciousness, and consciousness is the starting point of change.”

Stephen Ellcock’s books inspired this collection, which invites us to see the world through different eyes and experience the connection between all things. Odette believes in the importance of individual responsibility to create a better world, where macro and micro integrate into a single unit.

The attention to detail in her work goes beyond the technical. “Attention is consciousness, and consciousness is the starting point of change,” she reflects on her approach to textile art. Her pieces seek to give beauty and value to seemingly simple and useless elements, transforming them into works that speak of the connection between humans and their environment.

Her message for Mexico is clear: “Mexican culture and crafts are so rich. I firmly believe that ancient cultures and their crafts can lead us to change. Contemporary designers and artists must work together to create new paths, to care for this planet and all living beings.”

At Loona, this Collaboration 44 unites art, sustainability, and consciousness. Each piece tells a story where the simple is transformed and acquires new value through handwork and artistic vision.
