Weaving magic

I, Moon, want to tell you the story of two sisters who lived in a forest.

They used their spare time to weave.

Every night the older one cooked, while the younger one went to a river to wash clothes.

One day, while the younger one was wringing her clothes on the bank of the stream, a huge piece of wool came up, swaying through the water.

“How marvelous!” she said when she saw its brightness and color. And, thinking of her sister: “We can weave something nice with it.”

She bent down and pulled the wires out of the current. Then she put the material in the laundry basket and headed home.

When her older sister greeted her from outside their cabin, the woman told her, “I’ve found something special. We’ll be able to weave different things”.

Excited, they went to the garden, where they had a table. They spread the wool over it and looked at it curiously. The woman told her older sister how the material had come into her hands, and she, in turn, took the threads, as if she wanted to check their weight. As he took them, they slipped from her hands and fell to the floor.

When the first thread touched the soil, trees, flowers and plants immediately began to sprout, quickly drawing a colorful forest in their patio, in the middle of winter.

The landscape continued to develop. The younger sister sensed that she needed to take a thread. She did it and took it to her house. “Do you see the gift that nature gives us?” she said and continued: “We must use it to weave.”

They went to their chairs and got down to the task. Stitch by stitch until sleep overcame them.

The dawn took the forest from their garden. But, in their hands they had sweaters, hats and shirts that contained all the life that moments ago they had seen taking shape before their eyes. It was a true gift of nature.

Process

“Tach comes from Tachdjian. Our last name is Armenian”, say sisters Patricia and Sabrina Tachdjian while recalling the origin of the name of the brand that stars our Collaboration  Twenty-one.

At Tach, the Tachdjian sisters give life to knitted garments that have become favorites of both international celebrities and people looking for unique sustainable design proposals.

From singer Dua Lipa to actress Megan Fox or writers such as Alexa Chung or Leandra Medine. They all succumb to the charm of the colorful and cheerful pieces that emerge from this Uruguayan brand.

It comes with no surprise, since the starting point is the vintage spirit, one that they update at every opportunity.

Tach is also the space where they are allowed to express themselves. Specifically: “the dream visions of our childhood: the texture, the colors, the shapes of our designs. Everything invites you to play. We’ve been told that they look like ‘little works of art’”.

Art created by people in whose blood runs the sense of fashion. Their grandfather was an Armenian immigrant and opened a haberdashery in the 40s that later became a clothing store. Their father designed children’s clothing crafted in different workshops in Uruguay, while their mother’s family had a shoe-making workshop that in the 70s exported all over the world.

Their interest in the industry began early on while looking through the fashion magazines that came to their house every week: “We were born surrounded by fabrics, cutting tables and threads, we even packed gifts at Christmas to help in the store”, they have told Vogue magazine.

Since 2016, the sisters have worked on a brand that only seems to grow. On their Instagram account, @tach_clothing, they share with their almost 70,000 followers the contemporary look that knitted pieces can have. Pieces created with Uruguayan merino wool, a material recognized internationally for its warmth, flexibility, lightness and durability.

But this interest in sustainability goes beyond the use of ecological materials. It extends to the embroiderers who develop each garment, a way of keeping traditional trades alive, as they mention: “Unfortunately, the Uruguayan textile industry is disappearing. It had its golden age in the 80s. Our workshops are very small, we know all the ladies who work with us and we have a very good relationship with them. We like to stay that way.”

Nothing exemplifies the brand’s entire philosophy better than the sweaters that make up our Collaboration Twenty-One. Each one of them invites us to approach things in a different way, to avoid the buy-and-throw scheme that dominates today’s fashion industry, and to opt for timeless, soft and comfortable garments that feel like a hug. One that also extends to our Mother Earth.
