Textiles of Awakening
I, Moon, want to tell you a story that happened a long time ago, in Spain, in an era when mystics and artists were guided by the light of the stars and my nocturnal glow.
In that time lived a weaver of dreams and canvas, famous for the skill of his hands, which seemed extensions of the universe itself.
Under my light, he dedicated entire nights to intertwining wool and silk. He did not do it with common threads, but with ones impregnated with a specially treated gold.
Each knot he created was a point of intersection between the infinite light and the human soul, a map that outlined the tree of life in each of his creations. His looms were altars where the thread and needle danced to the rhythm of ancient melodies, which he hummed in silence and had learned from sages of other times.
One night, the craftsman plunged into a deep trance. In his ecstasy, different visions guided him to weave a tunic that, in addition to dressing, would also embrace the soul of the wearer.
With each thread crossed, the craftsman invoked a blessing. The tunic, upon completion, shone under my light, as if fragments of stars and the tranquility of the night had been captured in it.
Those who wrapped themselves in it not only dressed in beauty: they immersed themselves in a soul journey that led them to explore the depths of their being and to touch the very essence of creation. It was a garment that healed, that taught, and that transformed.
Those who wore it, guided by the wisdom of the Kabbalah, found in its threads a silent dialogue with the eternal, with the divine. The craftsman, with his hands and his heart, had managed to weave a bridge between heaven and earth.
However, the tunic, with its power and beauty, soon began to awaken greed in hearts not prepared to understand its true essence. The artisan, aware that not all souls were ready to embrace the depth of his art, decided that he must protect it.
Thus, under a starry night, with the murmur of the wind as an accomplice, he hid it in a place where only the truth of the spirit and the purity of the heart could reveal its whereabouts. It became a legend, a secret waiting to be discovered by one who, like its creator, sought to unite heaven and earth with threads of gold and light.
The tunic, hidden from those who would seek it for vanity or power, awaits the moment when a wise and gentle soul, guided by the wisdom of the Kabbalah and the light of the stars, finds it again and continues the legacy of the artisan. A legacy woven into the canvas of the universe, under the watchful eye of an eternal moon that whispers stories of magic and mystery.
Process
For our Collaboration 31, we present the work of Aitor Saraiba, a Spanish artist who has made his mark in the world of drawing, textile art, and ceramics over the last two decades.
His work, which has transcended borders from Los Angeles to Tokyo, and has been recognized with awards such as the ICON to the craftsman of the year by El País and the Regional Merit of Castilla La Mancha, reflects his mastery in the recovery of traditional techniques in contemporary art.
In his own words, Aitor describes the birth of his work as a series of pieces that “have an important spiritual and biographical meaning and are a form of personal healing and a search for understanding of my place in the world”.
Inspired by the Kabbalah—an ancient mystical tradition of Judaism that seeks to explain the relationship between God and the universe—he sees his work as a mirror of his soul, a narrative that is interwoven with the history and mysticism of his country.
Aitor’s creative process is as organic as his works themselves: “Ideas usually come from a word, an image, a walk, a hug, a farewell,” he says in an interview, “an emotion that for some reason I feel the need to recreate in some way in the physical world.” It is this spontaneity that infuses life and authenticity into each of his creations.
Living in a stone house in the mountains, Aitor finds in silence and mindful meditation the answers he seeks: “My work, stitch by stitch, is a mindful meditation that never ends, it is rocking myself,” he says. This return to the origins has allowed him to connect with nature and with a lifestyle that he considers the greatest luxury in the world.
Aitor carries with him a diary, a faithful companion where he notes the emotions and feelings that he later explores in his work. For him, “living slowly today is the greatest luxury in the world, and sometimes without realizing it I achieve it, and I love that”.
The pieces that Aitor brings exclusively to Mexico for Loona—three textile art pieces and some scapular-type medals—are a song to life and art, imbued with the special energy of his mother, who taught him to sew. “They are pieces that I have created with a lot of love,” he affirms, and in them is reflected his mission to “try to be a transistor of the Universe”.
In a world that cries out for sustainability, Aitor sees darning and repair as “one of the only solutions”. His love for Mexico and his desire to learn from its techniques and traditions are reflected in his work, which is a continuous exploration of culture and spirituality.
Our Collaboration 31 is a window into the soul of Aitor Saraiba, an opportunity to experience his devotion to the Light and his heart. With Loona, Aitor shares not only his art but also his vision of a sustainable future, a future that, as he says, “is the one we have to put all our energies into”.
